Inspirational Athletes

I heard HWN today in two athletes inspirational stories :)

The first was shared in sacrament meeting about John Stephen Akhwari. In the 1968 Olympics, he cramped up in the higher altitude of Mexico City compared to Tanzania. About half-way through the marathon event, Akhwari was hit during some jockeying for position. He fell, wounding his shoulder and dislocating his knee-joint. He continued running, finishing last, one hour after the first place finisher. An interviewed later asked why he continued the race, Akhwari said, “My country did not send me 5,000 miles to start the race; they sent me 5,000 miles to finish the race!”

To me, his answer means that he finished the race to be an inspiration to me :) and to anyone who experiences setbacks in life. I think our direction and destination in life are more important than how long it takes us to get there.

The second story was of Derek Redmond. I found this video while searching for the one I shared above, and I’ll let you watch it yourself :)
